aestitician/laser hair removal
Iam interested in goind to school for aestitcian as well as laser hair tech. Does anyone know the requirements for laser hair? Do you have to be a aestitician first? What is the earning potential and is the market saturated with unemployed aestitcians? Iam in Boise possibly moving to Ca. If you start your own business do you rent all equipment? Steamer/wax/laser etc. How proffitable is this? Is this a good career? I was told you can make most of your money selling products. Is this true? Do you have a discount a beauty supply stores? Thankyou for any info you can give I Greatly appreciate it! ,Kaci :)
The first thing you need to do is check with the state regulatory board of where you will be living. Each state has their own statutes/rules/regs as to who can do hair removal - that may be either with a laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) device.
Some state regulatory boards have differentiated the two devices due to their device classification with the FDA.
For example: If you go to school in one state and then move to another - that procedure may not be within your new state's scope of practice. Decide where you want to practice/live and then do your "due diligence" in researching the rules.
With regard to revenue - that is going to depend on the "medical supervision clause" of the rules you may discover in the state.
You may be required to work with medical supervision, thereby - being an employee. You may also want to visit www.ncea.tv for additional information on legislative issues. I wrote a book entitled," Esthetician's Guide to Working with Physicians" that has an entire chapter on employment agreements. Retail sales and service are the income streams for an esthetician. Depending on the environment you decide to work in i.e. medical, spa, salon, etc., hours, retirement plan, health benefits, holidays/vacations free procedures...there are many variables in determining how much money an esthetician can make. So in other words - you can make what you negotiate based on what is important to you.
This is an exciting time to become an esthetician because there have been advances made in esthetic education and standards. Good luck!

This link has more information about careers in laser hair removal. http://www.beautyschool.com/articles/details/laser-hair-removal-careers I don't believe you need to be a licensed esthetician first, but I could be wrong. It certainly isn't a bad idea to become an esthetician, though! It's a hugely rewarding and lucrative career if you market yourself waell.
I think this school is your best bet for laser training and electrology education in California: http://www.beautyschool.com/schools/details/american-institute-of-education
Someone who is a laser hair removal specialist or electrologist would be the ideal person to answer these questions... I'll see if I can get some folks in here!
