I am a new student in cosmetology and I need some pieces of advice about creating a professional and great student portofolio.

Invest in some good

Invest in some good photography. Doesn't matter how great the styling is the backgrounds are cluttered and the flash washes out the model. Go outside and use natural light.

If you can afford to, hire someone to take the photos. A student photographer should be relatively cheap, and do a good enough job.

Online Cosmetology Portfolios

I agree completely with shanak. I also think it's imperative to take pictures of your best work while you are in cosmetology school. So many beauty students make the mistake of graduating with no evidence of the great work they've done, so finding and getting a job is that much harder! So do amazing work, practice a lot, and get good photographic evidence to put your portfolio together.

Another thought I had is that you should get a variety of different work. For example, if you do hair, you would probably want to include photos of your best: short cut, long cut, up-do, ethnic hair, curly hair, etc.

You can actually put an online cosmetology portfolio together here on the Lounge if you visit LookBooks (definitely an easy, fast, free way to go!!). http://lounge.beautyschoolsdirectory.com/lookbooks

Most salon owners have no

Most salon owners have no idea what kind of work you do without seeing it, and they will want you to do some type of work for them to see but just as important they will be looking at you and your attitude. Photo albums can be impressive in a limited way, would play small part getting your foot in the door.

In our salon each potential stylist has 3 interviews to meet and greet owners and the rest of the staff, are then requested to bring one or several models to the salon on a busy saturday and work in our enviroment. We get to see the real you and you get to see the real us. We want only stylists who want to work with us. you have to experience it to know that.

We have a saying in our salon. If you are not happy where you are working you are working in the wrong place.
