Hi!
I'm a fresh new Esthetician starting out working hourly, for $8.00 an hour (a little low...but ok) and then as soon as I hit $300.00 in services (in two shifts, which equals 11 hours for me...) I start recieiving pay based off of commission.  Is this realistic? I have no clientele built up in the area!
Possibly searching for your comments, experiences, and encouragement!!

Thanks so much!

Hi Christina! I can't really answer your question about how realistic it will be for you to hit commission pay, but I guess I would say to be grateful for finding a job in the field so quickly. At least you can keep practicing and improving your skills. Just keep your eyes and ears opened for better opportunities, and eventually you can move on if your current employment isn't meeting your needs.

I went to school in Iowa, and was told it would be fairly easy to find work as an esthetician, but it hasn't worked out that way. It has been very discouraging! I've recently moved to Florida, but haven't found anything here yet either. I graduated in March, 2008 and haven't been able to practice esthetics since then. Only one of my classmates was able to find steady work in esthetics in Iowa. I'm having to pay back student loans for my esthetics schooling, but can't find a job to do that.

Good luck in your current employment, and future endeavors. Things will improve. You sound very upbeat, and motivated! Lisa

Hello!I'm so sorry to hear

Hello!
I'm so sorry to hear that you haven't been able to find work!  I was shocked, quite frankly, to get a call.  I won't be as lucky in 8 months when I am looking for employment in a different city.  But I am going to take all the training, skills, and education I can get and make myself as good as I can.  I hear ya on the debt... I owe my parents over $10k  for living expenses and tuition, I can only be thankful it's to them and not a bank!!

I hope that you are able to find work soon!  I just took a class at The Dermal Institute for Ulta in Chicago, IL, and it's the first class that employers send their SKin Care Therapists to (that's what Dermalogica likes to call us) after hiring.  I was surprised that there were 20-30 women in my class!  So hang in there, somewhere someone is hiring esties!!

Good luck :)  And thank you for the response and encouragement :)

Just to clarify - you are

Just to clarify - you are making $8 an hr but as soon as you bring in $300 the hourly gets dropped and you switch to commission? If that is the case, what is the commission %?

The commission rate at which

The commission rate at which I'd be earning would be 47% of my SERVICES... which would be GREAT if I had a clientele built up lol.

Base pay/ commission.

Hi Christina, I Have been in this Industry for a very long time. From a booth renter, commission,to Salon owner, And currently  a manager for JCPenney Salons. The commission that you earn in that salon Is about average across the board. However. what are your options for growth? Are there more opportunities in the salon for self promoting? Do you have a good team who will help you succeed? These are the things you need to consider.

JCPenneys is the Nations largest department store salon chain. We have so many tools to promote our associates. If you have not checked into our salons I would suggest you doing so. By the way. we pay the best in the industry. 55%! Take a look and see if its the right fit for you.

Do JCPenney Salons employ

Do JCPenney Salons employ estheticians as well?

I'm grateful to be paid when I do not have clients on my bed.  It just seems nearly impossible the hours I work (Mondays, Wed evenings, and Sundays) to "rope in" customers and convert them into clients.  I've been working hard for almost three months and still have no regular customer base, and average only about 15-20 clients a month (mostly eye brow waxes).
