New Job Jitters
I'm a newly licensed stylist and I recently started a new job, this is my first time working in a a salon and I'm a wee bit nervous about the whole thing! I'm trying to get comfortable in my "new" envoirment but it seems hard. Not to mention my manager SUCKS! she does not help me in any sort of way and that makes me even more nervous when I have a client in my chair. I'm overwhelmed with the thought of this new job and my fears of not being able to perform my job, although I know I CAN DO IT! I just can't seem to get over my fear of not knowing enough, or of making a mistake. I have even contemplated quiting the job. What should I do to get over my fears????

Lorio is right. If you can't get what you need from your boss then ask another stylist that you are comfortable with to help you when you need it. You can have "safe" words with that stylist if you are in need of help. You can ask her/him so I was thinking of doing... blankity blankity and I think 2 heads are better than 1, what do you think? or they could keep an eye and ear open to your consultation and they can step in saying "I just learned this new technique at a class, can I show you?" and let them demo it for you. What ever you are doing isn't necessarily "wrong" there just might be a better or easier way. Ask your boss and co-workers if they have any videos you could borrow. I lend mine out all the time and the new stylists always appreciates it.
Good luck, I'll get it

Dear Overwhelmed Stylist,
Take a deep breath, it will all get better! Starting any new job is scary. But remember why you took the job in the first place. You love to do hair, right? You completed your training and passed your state board exam, right? YOU CAN DO IT! Just remember why you are there and why you've chosen this career path. Be confident in yourself, trust your instincts, and don't quit!
If your boss isn't supportive, are there other stylists there that you can get to know, and even ask to be your mentor/coach? Just having that person there to support and encourage you, and offer you guidance when you need it can help a ton.
Remember to take it one day at a time, one foot in front of the other. It will get easier, especially when you are doing something you love!
Best of luck to you.
