I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice or information - i was thinking of leaving my desk job at a law firm and going to school for medical esthetics, it has been something i have been interested in for a while, I am 35, and going back to school at this point is pretty scary, I recently started going to a Esthetics spa for some chemical peel, micro derm and lazer treatment for acne scarring that i have had for years, which makes it even more of a desire to learn the profession, any advice or criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Medical esthetics/ new career

Brandi1573,

First thing you should do is a little research regarding what your state requires as far as licensing for esthetics and if there is licensing for medical estheticians (as opposed to just a certificate). Next, and most important, is to research the schools. This is going to be a huge step for you, and one you do not want to make based on price or location alone. I think this field is growing (although nothing is recession-proof) if you are willing to adapt and keep educating yourself on what's new and advanced in this field. Good luck to you.

No "Medical Esthetician" license in the US

FU to other post - there is no license currently in the United States for a medical esthetician. As a 28 year veteran in the field, I have had a great career in a salon, teacher at a school, working in a medical practices, becoming NCEA Certified and now work in association management of the NCEA and SDSS (dermatology skin care association). So, if you are motivated, love skin, love helping and working with people, then I encourage you to go to school to become an esthetician. Once licensed, you can work in medical, spa, marketing, teaching etc. - the career options are endless!

Susanne, don't be so modest!

Susanne, don't be so modest! brandi1573, Susanne actually just wrote an amazing article for Beauty Schools Directory that I think you will find very interesting and helpful. Check it out! "Esthetician Career Options in the Medical Esthetics Setting." :)

Same Boat

Brandi,
I am in the same boat as you! I'm thinking of going to school to get my skin care license while continuing to work and then, once I've completed my training, going out and finding a job at a salon or medical spa- I've been involved in the industry in one way or another (customer or employee) since I was in high school and it just feels like the "right" place for me to be. I'm very excited and just found a school I feel will work for me- good location and good price, The Academy of Massage and Bodywork. I hope you're able to find a good school for you and get your dream job in skin care! Keep me posted as you proceed :)
