If you love to do hair,you will be good at it. It is not a glamorous job,it is a lot of hard work. Find a good salon to work in. You may have to go through a few of them to find the right one for you. Do not get involved in the gossip as it will bring you down.

I started as an esthetician

I started as an esthetician at a place wher I thought I would really love and enjoy working. While I do, I am not getting any clients out of it. I'm mainly working retail because I can't seem to get anyone in my room and on the bed.
I signed a "non-compete" as a way to seal my employment. Is this common? It states that I cannot work within a 5 mile radius for 6 months after ending employment at the location.

How can I go find other jobs, when I can't afford to relocate?

Non-compete agreements

Not sure what state you are in, but only about 28 states still allow non-compete agreements and they have to be very well written in order to stand up in court. The use of non-compete clauses arose from the employer's concern of the exiting employee "stealing clients". The sad message for our industry is that prior to the NCEA creating a Esthetician Code of Ethics, there were far to many unprofessional client relationships. The NCEA states that: Estheticians will maintain client confidentiality, keep treatment documentation records, and provide clear, honest communication. If you worked as an esthetician in a medical setting, removal of patient information is punishable by law under the patient privacy act. (HIPAA)
Now I'm sure that you have no intention of doing that, but sometimes it helps to understand what motivates these types of agreements. A 5 mile radius is not cause for relocation is it? I live outside of NYC and most people drive 15-20 miles to get to work...so don't focus on distance. And most important...never burn your bridges, try to find a way to negotiate and explore other options that will keep your current employment relationship intact.
