I'm 17 years old.  I am currently still attending high school as a senior.  My main interest in selecting a major is cosmetology, but I feel I still need additional info..

Congratulations on choosing cosmetology. Let me know if I can answer any of your questions or help you find any information. :)

Thank for Replying

Thank you.  Well I've always had this instinct where I feel like cosmetology is ME.  But everyone around me thinks that it's just a waste of time and I won't be able to make a living off of it.  So right now, I'm stuck in between trying out cosmetology or going to a university and try something else that I can "make a living off of."  I have a ton of questions, but I'll start with the top ones.  How do you get started?  Can you really make a living off of being a cosmetologist?  I understand that if you're really good at it, you will but I'm just afraid that I won't be one of the good ones.  How difficult is it to get a job after you finish cosmetology school?  I've seen many people who have completed the course but has nothing to do afterwards.  And that's definitely not what I want.

Hi!

Hey!

I know that I'm not actually the one that your questions were directed at, but I came across your profile and wanted to send a little bit of encouragement.  My family doesn't love the idea of beauty school either.  However, the job market right now is pretty tough no matter what field you go into, there's no guaranteed major that you can "make a living" off of.  My best friend graduated college a year ago with an engineering degree and still hasn't found a job in that field. I think one of the main things about going to beauty school, is that after you are licensed, you can begin your own business or have the option of working for someone else, or even just working in your home.

And as far as not being one of the good ones, I bet if you feel it, you'll be amazing.  It takes lots of work and if it doesn't all come naturally to you, then you may have to practice more than the others, but if you really want to become great, you totally can, and it sounds to me like you will.

In my opinion, it's tough to find a job right now in most fields, but with a cosmetology license, if you can't find a job working for someone else, there's always the option of just going into business for yourself.  And there's not a whole lot of other fields that would enable you to do that right off the bat and within a year or so of starting.

I say go for it. :)
